Roland looked at her.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Vanessa’s confidence wavered.

Curtis reached into his pocket.

He took out his phone.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Who are you calling?”

Curtis tapped one contact.

The line connected immediately.

“Elias.”

The response came through the phone.

“Mr. Henderson.”

Captain Price straightened.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

Curtis continued.

“Freeze departure clearance.”

A pause.

“Immediately?”

“Immediately.”

Curtis looked toward the cockpit.

“Preserve cabin audio where legally retained.”

“Lock the crew manifest.”

“Lock the passenger manifest.”

“Bring legal and flight operations onto the aircraft.”

Elias answered:

“Understood.”

Curtis ended the call.

Vanessa stared.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?”

Curtis leaned back in 1A.

“Giving you the opportunity you refused to give me.”

“To check the record.”

Maribel had reached the tablet.

Her fingers shook as she opened the passenger manifest.

The screen loaded.

Then she stopped breathing.

Her eyes moved from the tablet to Curtis.

Back to the tablet.

Captain Price noticed.

“What?”

Maribel swallowed.

“Captain.”

She turned the screen toward him.

At the top of the manifest:

HENDERSON, CURTIS A.

OWNER AUTHORIZATION

SEAT 1A

EXECUTIVE COMMAND STATUS

AIRCRAFT BENEFICIAL OWNER REPRESENTATIVE

Below it:

Aircraft: HGA-701

Registered Operator: Henderson Global Aeronautics Flight Services

Beneficial Ownership: Henderson Aviation Holdings

Roland stared.

Then slowly looked at Curtis.

“Mr. Henderson.”

Curtis nodded once.

Vanessa looked between them.

“No.”

Nobody responded.

“That’s not…”

She stepped toward the tablet.

Maribel pulled it back instinctively.

Vanessa stared at Curtis again.

“You’re Curtis Henderson?”

“Yes.”

“The Curtis Henderson?”

Curtis’s expression did not change.

“I’m not aware of another one who owns this aircraft.”

The cabin went silent again.

Vanessa’s face lost color.

She looked around as if expecting someone to laugh and reveal an elaborate joke.

Nobody did.

Outside, a black SUV stopped near the private terminal entrance.

Three people exited.

Inside the cabin, a soft tone sounded through the communication system.

Then the voice of the operations controller came through.

“Executive command confirms departure hold on HGA-701.”

A second voice followed.

“Passenger authorization confirmed. Curtis Henderson, owner and CEO of Henderson Global Aeronautics, is aboard and assigned Seat 1A.”

Vanessa’s right hand dropped fully to her side.

Curtis stood.

He was six feet two.

Not physically imposing in an aggressive way.

But standing changed the balance of the cabin.

The old portfolio remained on the seat.

The espresso remained on the side table.

The red handprint on his cheek remained visible.

Curtis looked at Vanessa.

Then at Captain Price.

“Captain, nobody leaves the aircraft until legal arrives.”

Roland nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Vanessa found her voice.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Curtis looked at her.

“No.”

“You misunderstood who I was.”

“That is different.”

Eight minutes earlier, the morning had been ordinary.

Curtis had arrived at Van Nuys Airport before sunrise.

Los Angeles was only beginning to brighten.
