Curtis moved his hand between hers and the portfolio.

Not aggressively.

Just preventing access.

Vanessa pulled back.

Then, almost without thinking, struck him.

The slap happened in less than a second.

The consequences lasted years.

When Elias Morgan arrived at the aircraft, the cabin door was still open.

Elias was fifty-three and served as Henderson Global Aeronautics’ general counsel.

Behind him came Dana Cho, director of flight operations, and a corporate security manager named Aaron Velez.

Elias stepped aboard.

He saw Curtis standing near 1A.

Then the red mark.

His expression changed.

“Curtis.”

“I’m fine.”

Elias looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?”

Curtis pointed toward Maribel.

“Start with her.”

Vanessa immediately protested.

“I can explain.”

Curtis held up one hand.

“You will.”

“After she speaks.”

Maribel swallowed.

She looked at Elias.

Then Captain Price.

Then Vanessa.

Her supervisor.

The woman who controlled recommendations, preferred routes, and performance notes.

Maribel had wanted this job for years.

Her mother cleaned hotel rooms.

Her father drove a city bus.

Maribel had worked through aviation hospitality training while taking evening classes.

This job paid more than anything she had held before.

Vanessa knew that.

So when Vanessa told her not to check the manifest, Maribel froze.

That fact already ashamed her.

Elias spoke gently.

“Tell us what you saw.”

Maribel inhaled.

“Mr. Henderson was already seated when Ms. Crowe came forward.”

“Had he been cleared?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“I welcomed him.”

“Did he enter through the normal boarding process?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone alert you that he was unauthorized?”

“No.”

Elias nodded.

“Continue.”

“Ms. Crowe asked who seated him.”

“He said he was assigned 1A.”

“She said that wasn’t possible.”

“Did she check the manifest?”

“No.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“The tablet was nearly dead.”

Dana looked at the tablet.

“It has forty-two percent battery.”

Vanessa stopped.

Maribel continued.

“Mr. Henderson told her to check.”

“She refused.”

“Then she tried to reach for his portfolio.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa said:

“I was verifying identity.”

Elias looked at her.

“By opening private documents?”

“I never opened anything.”

“No.”

Curtis said.

“Because I stopped you.”

Maribel continued.

“Mr. Henderson told her not to touch it.”

“Then…”

Her voice weakened.

Elias waited.

“She slapped him.”

Silence.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Captain Price looked toward the floor.

Dana’s jaw tightened.

Elias asked:

“Did Mr. Henderson touch her first?”

“No.”

“Threaten her?”

“No.”

“Raise his voice?”

“No.”

“Refuse a lawful safety instruction?”

Maribel shook her head.

“No.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“He refused to move.”

Elias looked at her.

“From his assigned seat.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
