Daniel waited.

"But you also protected her secret from me," Elise continued. "You sat beside me at her funeral knowing she had a daughter. You watched me cry over a woman who had asked you to keep me outside the circle. You let me believe that the worst thing between us this year was grief. And grief was real. But this—" She gestured at the bag, the socks, the photographs. "This is a living person. Mara. A child with a child. And you were going to manage the timing of my knowing as if my knowing were a scheduling problem."

"I was afraid," Daniel said. The words landed without defense. "Afraid you'd think I chose Natalie over you. Afraid you'd think the money meant I didn't trust our marriage enough to be honest. Afraid that if I told you while we were both drowning in funeral food and probate, you'd have to carry Natalie's crisis and my secrecy at the same time. I told myself I was waiting for the right moment. There is no right moment for this. There is only the moment you stop being a coward."

Elise laughed once, without humor. "Finally something true that isn't wrapped in nobility."

Toby stirred on the sofa. Both parents froze. The boy murmured, resettled, slept on. The fire had burned lower; Daniel added a log with the quiet precision of a man grateful for a task. Sparks rose and vanished.

Elise walked to the sectional and sat on the ottoman near Toby's feet, close enough to feel the heat, far enough to keep the conversation in the adult register. Daniel remained by the island, the coral handbag open between them like a patient on a table.

"What do you want from me tonight?" Elise asked.

"I want you to be angry as long as you need," Daniel said. "I want you to read everything again tomorrow when you're not in shock. I want us to decide, together, whether we contact Mara. And I want you to know that I am not asking you to absolve me because Natalie is dead. Dead people don't get to launder the living."
