"I'm not lecturing. I'm explaining why I didn't tell you."

"Why didn't you?"

Daniel was quiet for a long time. The cedar smell seemed thicker. "Because Natalie asked me not to. Because she was ashamed. Because she thought if you knew, you would insist on confronting Greg at Thanksgiving, and she wasn't ready. Because she thought you would look at her differently — not with less love, but with that careful pity people get when they decide a woman is a victim first and a person second. She couldn't stand that. And because—" He swallowed. "Because I promised her. And I keep promises even when they turn into lies by another name."

Elise pressed her fingertips to her eyelids. "Continue."

The go-bag, Daniel said, had lived for months in the back of Natalie's closet inside a suitcase she never used. Passport. Birth certificate. The cash. A cheap phone with a number Greg didn't know. A change of clothes. A toothbrush. A letter addressed to Elise that Natalie had written and rewritten and still not sent. A second letter for their parents. Photographs of Natalie and Daniel as children at a lake, which she said she wanted with her if she had to start over with nothing else.

In late August, Natalie had finally set a date. Labor Day weekend, when Greg would be at a teaching conference in Phoenix. Daniel would drive to Boulder, help her load a rental car, follow her as far as the safe apartment the attorney had arranged in Fort Collins. From there, legal filings. From there, a life.

On the Thursday before that weekend, Natalie collapsed in a client's powder room in Vail. Aneurysm. Massive. She was thirty-nine. By the time Daniel reached the hospital, she was gone.

He had said none of this at the funeral. He had stood beside Elise and held her hand while Greg performed grief like a man auditioning for sympathy. He had helped their parents pack Natalie's clothes. He had watched Greg claim the role of devastated widower in every conversation. And on a Tuesday in September, while Greg was at the funeral home finalizing the urn, Daniel had used the spare key Natalie had given him months earlier, walked into the Boulder house, opened the closet, and taken the coral handbag.
