Dante placed one hand over hers.

“Look at me.”

Matilda did.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Her eyes filled.

“Did you?”

Dante looked at Zane.

“No.”

Calista stepped out.

She had heard the last part.

Not the beginning.

Her eyes moved from Zane to Dante to Matilda.

Something in her expression shifted.

Then Oliver appeared behind her.

Watching.

Calista had spent years learning what happened when she showed uncertainty.

Her father, Raymond Reed, had worked nearly thirty years in manufacturing.

When Calista was nine, the factory closed.

She watched him carry a cardboard box into the family car.

Her mother cried in the kitchen that night.

Raymond told everyone he was fine.

He was not.

Calista built her adult personality around never becoming disposable.

Never needing mercy.

Never giving anyone a reason to think she was soft.

Oliver recognized that hunger when he recruited her.

He gave her increasingly visible authority.

Then limited what she actually saw.

He praised her toughness.

Her efficiency.

Her ability to make unpopular decisions.

Calista believed she was becoming powerful.

In truth, she had become useful.

Now she looked at a crying child and felt the old factory parking lot rise inside her.

Still, Oliver was watching.

Zane was watching.

Employees were watching.

Calista chose the armor.

“Sir.”

She said.

“This is an executive floor.”

Dante stood.

“So?”

“If you cannot maintain a professional environment, we’ll need to ask you to leave.”

Dante stared.

“Professional.”

Calista’s expression tightened.

“Yes.”

He looked toward Matilda.

“Is that the word for letting a grown man insult a six-year-old’s father?”

Calista hesitated.

One second.

Two.

Zane stepped in.

“Security.”

The lead guard looked uncertain.

Dante remained still.

Matilda grabbed his coat.

“Daddy.”

Dante crouched.

He wiped one tear from her cheek.

“Go stand with Miss Constance.”

“No.”

“Just for a minute.”

“Are you leaving?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

Dante looked directly into her eyes.

“I promise.”

He turned toward Constance.

She was already walking around the desk.

“Come with me, sweetheart.”

Matilda held Bluebell.

Then took Constance’s hand.

Dante stood.

Zane said:

“Escort him out.”

Two guards approached.

Dante reached inside his coat.

Both slowed immediately.

Dante removed a black metal credential card.

Not government identification.

Corporate authentication.

It contained a unique secure code connected to Mercer Meridian’s shareholder registry and founder trust.

The lead guard recognized the symbol.

He had been trained never to physically interfere with anyone presenting a verified founder-level access credential without confirming through central security.

His face changed.

Zane snapped:

“What are you waiting for?”

The guard ignored him.

“Sir.”

He addressed Dante.

“May I scan that?”

“Yes.”

Dante held it out.

The security terminal beeped.

Then displayed a restricted screen.

AUTHORIZED FOUNDER ACCESS

DANTE MERCER

MERCER FAMILY TRUST

CONTROLLING VOTING AUTHORITY

The guard stepped backward.

Zane stared.

Calista’s breath stopped.

Oliver’s face disappeared of color.

Dante removed the visitor badge from his jacket.

He handed it to Constance.

“Thank you.”

She took it.
