She touched Shadow's ear. "Thank you for not being gone."

Shadow sighed, a deep old-dog sigh, and stayed.

They exchanged small gifts: a book of poetry for her, a watch with a simple face for him, a ridiculous squeaky toy for Shadow that he ignored in favor of a sock he had already claimed. Late that night, Marcus walked Jasmine to her car. Snow sifted down under the streetlight. He kissed her forehead, then her mouth, carefully, as if testing whether the old warmth still lived under the scar tissue. It did. It was quieter. It was enough to keep going.

In January, Marcus made a decision. He would transition out of active duty over the next eighteen months. Reserves, maybe. A job with a veterans' outreach program that had already interviewed him twice. Jasmine cried when he told her — not because she wanted him out, exactly, but because the announcement meant he was building a future that included the possibility of staying, and staying was a word she had stopped trusting.

"I don't want you to leave the Army for me," she said.

"I'm not," he said. "I'm leaving the version of my life where goodbye is the most reliable ritual I have. Shadow's fourteen soon. I want to be the person who opens the door every day until he doesn't need the door anymore. And I want to see if you and I can be people who open it for each other without flinching."

They found a two-bedroom in the spring, a place with enough light for plants and enough yard for a slow old shepherd to patrol his kingdom. Jasmine moved in on a Saturday in April. Marcus carried boxes. Denise brought lasagna. Shadow supervised from the porch, gray around the muzzle now, eyes still sharp.
