"You did," he said, not unkindly. "And then you helped fill it back up. Both things are true."

A moth bumped against the porch light. Shadow, who had followed them out, rested his chin on Marcus's thigh. Somewhere down the block, someone laughed. A car passed with its windows down and music spilling out. Ordinary life, stitching itself together one ordinary evening at a time.

The years did not announce themselves. They accumulated. Marcus left active duty. He took the outreach job and discovered he was good at sitting with angry young men who had come home to empty rooms and sharper silences. He told them, when it fit, a shortened version of Shadow's story — not to shame anyone, but to say that the people who wait for you are real, and the bonds you leave behind do not pause just because you are gone. One young veteran, after a long silence, said, "My girl gave my cat away." Marcus said, "Then you know the temperature of that particular fire." They sat with it. Sometimes sitting with it was the work.

Jasmine went back to school part-time for nursing, the long road Denise had once walked, and came home smelling of antiseptic and ambition. She studied at the kitchen table with Shadow's head on her foot. When she passed her first major exam, Marcus cooked steak and burned it and they ate it anyway, laughing, and Shadow got the edges.

They got engaged on a Tuesday in October because Marcus said he was tired of waiting for a perfect moment and the perfect moment was any moment Shadow was still asleep at their feet. The ring was simple. Jasmine cried and then laughed and then made him put it on her finger twice because the first time her hand was shaking too much.

"You sure?" she asked.

"I've been sure about you longer than I've been sure about how to forgive the hard parts," he said. "The surety caught up. That's all."
