His own voice asking, Marcus? He expected the recollection to destroy the morning. It did not. It hurt, but pain no longer meant collapse.

Later that day he met Caleb for lunch. “You okay?” Caleb asked after Nathan mentioned the anniversary. Nathan considered the question.

“Yeah.” Caleb waited, because soldiers know when yes needs room. Nathan added, “I think I finally understand that coming home wasn't the end of anything.

I treated it like a finish line. But there wasn't one.” Caleb took a drink. “That's annoyingly healthy.”

Nathan smiled. “Therapy is ruining me.” They laughed. The next spring, Nathan bought a small townhouse fifteen minutes from base.

It was nothing like the suburban house he had shared with Emily. There was no stone fireplace, no wide entryway, no wall already filled with family photographs. Nathan liked that. Empty walls felt honest.

He painted one room himself, built shelves in the garage, and planted a young maple in the narrow backyard despite knowing he might be transferred years later. The act was less about permanence than willingness to belong somewhere again. He also started dating, slowly. The woman was named Rachel, a physical therapist he met through friends.

Nathan told her about the divorce on their third date because he had no interest in building intimacy around curated facts. He did not tell the story as a warning or as proof that women could not be trusted. That mattered to him. Emily had betrayed him; women as a category had not.

Marcus had betrayed him; friendship as a concept was not fraudulent. Healing required specificity. Rachel listened without turning the story into pity. “That sounds awful,” she said.

“It was.” “Do you still love her?” Nathan respected the directness.

“Not in a way that asks me to go back.” Rachel nodded. “That's a useful answer.”
