Walter bid once on Ruth’s favorite red-handled shears, then stopped when Maya pointed out that Denise had already packed the actual pair from Ruth’s desk and the auction lot was only backups. A woman from Hays bought three quilt frames. A church group bought folding tables. The old Prairie Star sign sold for $225 to a local antique dealer Walter recognized but did not know.
That one hurt more than expected. Maya squeezed his hand under the chair. At 12:43 p.m., Jason Bell cleared his throat and announced the building lot. The barn shifted.
People sat straighter. Conversations stopped. Grant Holloway put his bidder card on one knee and leaned back with the confidence of a man arriving at the part he came for. Walter’s bidder number suddenly felt ridiculous in his palm.
Jason described the property quickly: two connected storefronts, just under 4,000 square feet, Main Street frontage, rear alley access, contents remaining after designated lots, closing within thirty days. Then he looked over the room. “We’ll start at twenty-five thousand for the building and remaining contents.” Grant lifted his card almost lazily.
“Twenty-five.” Jason pointed. “Twenty-five thousand.” “Looking for thirty.”
Maya leaned close to Walter. “Grandpa, bid.” Walter stared at the floor for half a second before looking at her. “Baby, I don’t have that kind of money.”
