Lily’s voice shook so hard the words nearly broke apart.

“Because Ryan is the father.”

There it was. Not a rumor. Not a look. A sentence with a name in it.

Ava turned toward her husband as if her neck had become a hinge that hurt. The dark-green dress held her spine straight. Her blue-gray eyes did not fill at once. First they emptied. Shock does that. It takes the furniture out of the room behind the eyes.

“Ryan?”

He said her name like a man grabbing a railing.

“Ava, listen to me.”

Listen. As if attention were the problem. As if she had simply not been paying attention to her own marriage.

Ava’s beauty, in that moment, became something sharp. Heartbreak came up through her throat and fury came with it, and the two feelings did not take turns. They braided. She looked at Lily, at the little protective hand, at the sister she had walked through every hallway of this house, and then she looked at the man who had rolled up his sleeves as if dinner were still a reasonable plan.

“My own sister?”

Lily started crying in the open. Not pretty crying. The kind that pulls the mouth down and makes a person look younger and worse. “I’m sorry.”

The apology landed on the table and did nothing, the way a napkin does nothing for a spilled gallon.

Ryan leaned forward now, late, desperate, his athletic height useless in a chair. “I can explain.”

Ava stared at him with a disgust so complete it almost looked like calm. The chandelier found the wet in her eyes and made it glitter. She did not wipe it. She let him see it.
