The garage door slammed shut with a loud crash, and Daniel Carter froze in place, his wrench still in his hand.

Someone was banging on the front glass of his shop.

It was almost 9:00 at night, long after closing time, and the street outside was empty except for one car parked crookedly under the broken streetlight.

Daniel wiped grease from his fingers and walked toward the door.

Through the glass, he saw a teenage girl standing there, her shoulders shaking. She was crying so hard she could barely speak.

Behind her, a small silver car sat with its hood popped open, steam rising faintly from the engine.

He unlocked the door fast.

“Hey, hey, slow down. What happened?”

The girl looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen.

“My car just died. It made this horrible noise, and then it stopped. I don’t know what’s wrong. I don’t have money for a mechanic. My mom is at work, and she’s not answering her phone.”

Daniel felt something tighten in his chest.

He had a daughter about this girl’s age. If Chloe ever broke down alone at night, crying on some stranger’s doorstep, he would want someone to help her the same way he was about to help this girl.

“What’s your name?” he asked, stepping outside into the cold air.

“Grace,” she said, wiping her face with her sleeve. “Grace Hanson.”

“Okay, Grace. Let’s take a look before you panic any more than you already have.”

He walked toward her car, flashlight already in hand from his back pocket. The hood was still open, and thin white smoke curled up from somewhere near the front.

Grace followed him, hugging her arms around herself.

“I have to get home. My mom works nights at the hospital. She doesn’t know I took the car out. I was just picking up dinner for us, and then this happened.”

Daniel leaned over the engine, shining his light across the metal parts.

He could already smell the problem before he saw it. Burnt rubber.

A coolant hose had come loose and was spraying fluid onto the hot engine block.

It wasn’t a huge repair, but if she had kept driving, the engine could have overheated badly enough to cause real damage.

“You did the right thing pulling over,” he said. “If you kept driving this, you might have ruined the whole engine.”

Grace’s lip trembled again.

“Can you fix it? I don’t have money right now, but I can pay you later. I promise. Please, I just need to get home.”

Daniel looked at her for a moment.

She wasn’t lying. He could see it in the way her hands shook, the way her voice cracked on every other word.

This wasn’t a girl trying to scam a free repair.

This was a scared kid standing alone at night with nowhere else to turn.

“Pull it into the garage,” he said. “I’ll take a look properly under the lights.”
