Daniel paused his work, glancing toward the waiting area.

He was surprised that word of Peter Lang’s visit had somehow spread as well.

He wasn’t sure how people even knew about that conversation, but it seemed like every part of his life had suddenly become public property, dissected and discussed by strangers who felt personally invested in his choices.

That evening, after closing the shop, Daniel picked up Chloe from her after-school program.

They drove home together in comfortable silence for a while before she finally spoke up.

“Dad, some kids at school were talking about starting a fundraiser for your shop, since so many people online want to support you.”

Daniel glanced at her, surprised.

“A fundraiser? I don’t need charity, sweetheart. The shop is doing fine, more than fine, actually, since all this happened.”

“I know,” Chloe said quickly. “That’s what I told them.”

“But they said it’s not really charity if people want to give it. They said it’s more like people saying thank you for reminding them that good people still exist.”

Daniel considered her words carefully as they pulled into their apartment complex.

There was a certain wisdom in what she said, a distinction between accepting help out of necessity and accepting gratitude freely given by people who felt they owed something in return.

Still, the entire situation continued to sit uneasily with him.

He had spent years teaching Chloe that doing the right thing meant expecting nothing in return, and now the world seemed determined to reward him regardless of his intentions.

The following week, Grace and her mother stopped by the shop again, this time just to check in rather than for any car trouble.

Grace looked more relaxed than she had that first night, her earlier tears replaced now with an easy, grateful smile.

“The shop looks busy,” Grace said, glancing around at the full parking lot and the steady stream of customers moving in and out of the waiting area.

“Busier than I know what to do with,” Daniel admitted, wiping his hands on a rag as he greeted them.

“Marcus has been a lifesaver, honestly. I don’t think I could keep up with all this on my own.”

Karen smiled warmly.

“I’m glad it’s working out, even if it started a bit chaotically. For what it’s worth, I never expected the post to go this far.”

“I just wanted people to know that good things still happen.”

“They do,” Daniel said. “Even if they come with a bit of extra noise attached.”

Grace laughed softly.

“Speaking of noise, my friends at school won’t stop asking me about you.”

“I think half of them have a small crush on the idea of you now, the mysterious kind mechanic who saved a stranded girl on a dark road.”

Daniel chuckled, shaking his head.

“Well, tell your friends the mysterious mechanic is just a tired dad trying to keep up with an overflowing schedule these days.”

As they continued talking, Peter Lang’s black car pulled into the lot once again, catching everyone’s attention.

Daniel felt a flicker of tension return to his shoulders as the businessman stepped out, this time accompanied by another man carrying a folder of paperwork.
