This was not a reunion episode in someone else’s morality play. But by coincidence, one familiar person was there. Aisha Coleman had brought Zoe downtown for a children’s dance workshop and recognized Eli’s name on the sign while buying coffee. She stopped so suddenly Zoe bumped into her.

“That’s him,” Aisha whispered. Zoe, now seven, looked toward the piano and remembered immediately. “Piano boy?” “Eli,” Aisha corrected.

They stayed at the edge of the audience. When Eli sat down, he did not see them. He saw the black piano, the reflection of moving people in its side panel, and the high station windows turning afternoon light pale across the floor. For one brief second his hands remembered the tension of that first day.

He remembered Melissa’s smirk, Tom’s laugh, Aisha’s comment, and the way his backpack strap had cut into his fingers. Then he let the memory go. He began “Rain on Tin.” The piece opened with isolated notes in the upper register, irregular at first, then gathering into patterns that rippled across both hands.

It was not as immediately impressive as fast Mozart. It required listening. Eli played with more control than he had possessed a year before and, more importantly, with less need to prove that control existed. People stopped anyway.

Aisha watched him and felt something different from guilt this time. Pride was too personal a word; she had no claim on him. Respect was closer. She looked down at Zoe, who was moving one hand unconsciously in time with the music.

“You know,” Aisha whispered, “sometimes grown-ups think they know what kids should be before kids get a chance to show them.” Zoe gave her the unimpressed expression children reserve for lessons they already understand. “I know.” Aisha smiled.

“Right.” Eli finished to warm applause. He stood, bowed, and moved aside for Maya’s violin performance. On his way toward Sarah, he spotted Aisha and Zoe.
