Denise did not look up from her phone at first. When she did, she looked at the cup, then at the worksheet, then at Emily’s face, and something in her closed.

“We don’t take math notes from the woman with the coffee.” She did not raise her voice to say it.

The sentence was not loud. It did not need to be. The booth had its own weather. Caleb’s pencil stopped above a digit. His ears went red at the tops, which is where shame arrives first in certain children, before the throat and long before the eyes. He did not defend Emily. He did not yet know there was anything to defend. He only looked at the second line as if the line had betrayed him by being visible.

Emily’s hand remained steady on the pot. She could feel the heat through the black handle, a dull heat, almost friendly. Around them the diner continued. Dennis called a turkey club from the pass. A toddler struck a spoon against a high-chair tray and was astonished by the permanence of cause. Ruth, broad in a cardigan the color of mushrooms, seated a party of five and did not glance over, because Ruth trusted her floor until the floor gave her a reason not to. Emily could have smiled the smile that ended things. It was a small, decent door. She did not use it.

“One number on the second line was copied wrong. That’s all.”
