There it was. The question had been walking toward the table since she had said that’s all, and now it sat down and looked at her. Emily felt the diner return in force: the bell, the vinyl, the highway, the weight of her hair tied back, the small burn on her left wrist from the morning’s coffee spill, a pink oval she had stopped noticing until this moment. She could have said a class. She could have said a book. Both would have been true and insufficient, the way a receipt is true and not the meal. Denise was watching with an attention that had stopped being sport. The boy was watching with the simpler attention of someone who has found a door and wants to know what building it belongs to.

Emily picked up the coffee pot. The handle was only warm now. She did not use it as a shield, though she felt the impulse, muscular and absurd.

“I studied mathematics,” she said. “For a long time. At a university, and then after the university. I taught it. I was good at it in the way you are good at it, which is not the same as being fast at a party. Then I stopped. Now I work here.”

The sentences were plain. They cost her more than the solution had. Caleb nodded as if this were a reasonable biography, which, to a child, it almost was: people did things and then they did other things. Denise did not nod. She folded her hands. The amusement was gone, not crushed, spent. In its place was a curiosity she seemed to distrust.

“You stopped,” she said. “People don’t usually stop things they can do like that unless something happened. You don’t have to tell us what happened. I am aware that I am a stranger who was rude to you over a cup of coffee. I am trying to be accurate again. You don’t have to tell us. But I am going to ask, because my son is looking at you as if you are a possible future, and I would like to know whether the future is a warning.”
