Angela left the hospital feeling as though the ground beneath her family history had begun collapsing. She wanted to confront Charles Whitmore immediately, but Mara urged patience. Thomas had been seriously ill, and the events he described occurred decades earlier. Even an honest witness could misremember details, especially when fear and guilt shaped the memories. Angela understood the warning, yet she couldn't stop imagining Daniel being carried away from a burning house.

That evening, Noah found her sitting alone at the kitchen table.

"Mom, are you crying?"

Angela wiped her cheeks.

"I'm just thinking about Grandma Evelyn."

Noah climbed onto the chair beside her.

"Did you find out what happened?"

"Not everything."

He studied the photograph of Daniel.

"Was he your brother?"

Angela nodded.

"He lived with us when we were little."

"Where is he now?"

"I don't know."

Noah looked thoughtful.

"Maybe he's looking for you too."

Angela managed a sad smile.

"Maybe."

Then Noah pointed toward Daniel's necklace.

"That looks like Grandpa's."

Angela froze.

"What?"

"The silver star. Grandpa kept one in his wooden box."

She remembered immediately. After Robert died, Angela inherited a small collection of keepsakes, including his watch, Evelyn's wedding ring, and a silver pendant with a broken chain. She had never understood why Robert kept it.

Angela retrieved the box from her bedroom closet.

The pendant was exactly like the one in Daniel's photograph.

Noah examined it carefully.

"Mom, I think it opens."

Angela noticed a tiny seam along the edge.

Using a sewing needle, she gently pressed the clasp.

The pendant separated into two halves.

Inside was a miniature photograph of Margaret Price holding a baby.

On the opposite side lay a folded strip of paper.

Six numbers had been written in faded blue ink.

Angela stared at the photograph.

Beneath it was a message.

For Daniel, so you'll always know someone loved you.

Tears gathered in Angela's eyes.

Noah touched her hand.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing, sweetheart. I think we found something important."

He examined the numbers.

"Maybe it's a secret code."

Angela photographed the paper and sent it to Mara.

A reply arrived fifteen minutes later.

Don't touch anything else. I'm coming over.

When the detective arrived, she examined the pendant beneath a lamp.

Beside the six numbers were three nearly invisible letters.

B.C.H.

Mara recognized them.

"Briarwood County Hospital."

Angela frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Mara turned the paper toward the light.

"It's an old patient identification number."

Then she looked at Margaret's photograph.

"I think somebody wanted Daniel to know where his mother went."
