When David met Thomas Whitaker, the old man began crying. He was sitting upright in his hospital bed when Angela entered with David. Thomas looked toward the doorway, and for several seconds, he seemed unable to breathe.
"Daniel?"
David nodded.
"It's me."
Thomas struggled to stand.
David crossed the room and embraced him.
"I looked for you," Thomas whispered.
"I know."
"I thought I'd failed your mother."
David held him tighter.
"You helped Evelyn. You kept the records. You came back."
Thomas shook his head.
"It wasn't enough."
David stepped backward.
"Maybe not. But I'm here now."
Angela watched them together. Two people who had spent decades separated by fear and missing records were finally standing in the same room.
Later that afternoon, Noah arrived with Mrs. Patterson.
He carried a small paper bag.
Thomas smiled when he saw the familiar yellow coat.
"There's my guardian angel."
Noah grinned.
"My mom says I'm not allowed to rescue strangers by myself anymore."
Angela raised an eyebrow.
"That's right."
Noah handed Thomas the bag.
Inside was a new pair of winter gloves.
Thomas stared at them.
"You already gave me your scarf."
"I know."
"Why gloves?"
Noah shrugged.
"Because your hands were cold too."
Thomas began laughing through his tears.
David watched quietly.
Then he turned toward Angela.
"Does Noah know who I am?"
Angela smiled.
"Not yet."
She called him closer.
"Noah, there's someone I want you to meet."
David knelt so they were at eye level.
"I'm David."
Noah shook his hand politely.
Angela continued.
"David is my brother."
Noah's eyes widened.
"The boy in the photograph?"
David nodded.
Noah stared for a moment.
Then he grinned.
"Does that make you my uncle?"
"I guess it does."
Noah looked delighted.
"I've never had an uncle before."
David laughed.
"I've never had a nephew."
Noah considered that.
"Do you like video games?"
"Not very good at them."
"I can teach you."
David looked toward Angela. For the first time since their reunion, he laughed without sadness.
Thomas watched the exchange with tears in his eyes.
Angela sat beside him.
"Are you okay?"
The old man nodded.
"I made Evelyn a promise."
"What promise?"
"That I'd find Daniel."
Angela glanced toward her brother and son.
"You did."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Noah.
"Your boy found me."
And as Noah began explaining his favorite video game to David, Angela understood how one small act of kindness had brought a forgotten family together.
