The old chapel stood near the abandoned grounds of the Briarwood Children's Home. Its wooden doors were warped, its stained glass windows broken, and weeds grew through cracks in the stone steps. Mara arranged for a structural engineer to examine the building before investigators entered. After receiving clearance, officers began searching carefully, aware that decades of neglect had weakened several sections of the floor.

The sanctuary contained broken furniture and discarded hymnbooks, but nothing unusual. Behind the vestry, however, Luis discovered a wooden panel that appeared newer than the surrounding walls. When technicians removed it, they found a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Beneath the chapel lay a small room with metal shelving, locked filing cabinets, and several waterproof containers. Much of the paper had deteriorated, but some boxes remained intact.

Investigators photographed and cataloged everything before opening them.

Inside were adoption records, correspondence, financial statements, and photographs. Several documents referenced children supposedly transferred to institutions with no verifiable addresses. Others contained conflicting names and unexplained payments.

Mara contacted state investigators immediately.

The material was too extensive for one local detective to examine.

Over the following weeks, specialists began reconstructing the institution's historical operations. Some records documented legitimate adoptions. Others raised serious concerns. Several children appeared under different identities in separate files, and certain transfer authorizations contained signatures requiring further examination.

The documents didn't prove every allegation Thomas had made, but they provided leads that could be independently verified.

Then technicians discovered a sealed metal box beneath a loose floorboard.

Inside were several cassette tapes and an old portable recorder.

Audio specialists eventually recovered portions of the recordings.

One tape contained Samuel Whitmore's voice.

He described concerns about irregular financial transactions and missing birth records.

Another captured a heated conversation between Samuel and a man he identified as Charles.

The second speaker warned Samuel that pursuing the matter would destroy their family.

Samuel answered calmly.

"Then maybe our family deserves to be exposed."

Angela listened to a verified copy beside Mara.

The recording was distorted, and some words remained impossible to understand. But the anger in both men's voices was unmistakable.

Near the end, Samuel said something that made Angela's blood run cold.

"Evelyn already knows where the children went."

The other speaker became silent.

Then he asked, "What have you told her?"

The tape ended abruptly.

Angela looked at Mara.

"Does this prove Charles knew?"

"It supports further investigation. We still need to authenticate the voices and establish context."

Angela nodded.

For decades, everyone had described Evelyn as the victim of an accidental fire.

Now investigators had found evidence that she had been protecting vulnerable children.

And someone had apparently feared what she knew.
