The trial concerning the hotel incident began the following spring. Prosecutors did not claim that Vivian had masterminded every failure in Andrew and Laura's marriage. They limited the charges to conduct the available evidence could support: the alleged confinement at the hotel, interference with communications, and related acts documented by records and witnesses. The jury heard from Teresa, hotel employees, digital-forensics specialists, and the contractor who had accompanied Laura down the service corridor. When Laura demanded to leave, he followed Vivian's instructions to block the hall.

Vivian took the stand in her own defense. She acknowledged she had spoken sharply to Sophie and said she regretted it. She insisted Laura appeared uninvited and threatened to create a scene. According to Vivian, the storeroom was intended as a quiet place for Laura to calm down until Andrew could be consulted. The prosecution confronted her with footage showing her walking away after the lock engaged and with messages about keeping Laura from Andrew until after the ceremony. Vivian said those words had been taken out of context. The jury was left to decide whether her explanation matched the evidence.

Laura testified for less than an hour. She described receiving the invitation, arriving at the hotel, and asking to leave when it became clear Andrew was not waiting. She explained that she heard music through the wall and tapped on the door until her hands hurt. Then she heard a child's footsteps. “I knew her before she spoke,” Laura said. “I knew how she walked when she was nervous.” Asked why she told Sophie to find Andrew rather than Vivian, she answered, “Because Vivian was the person who had stopped me from leaving.” Laura did not embellish. When a question concerned something she had not seen, she said she didn't know.

Andrew testified about his part in the story. He described believing the messages, accepting the failed visits as proof that Laura had abandoned Sophie, and giving Vivian administrative control over accounts he should have monitored. The defense suggested he was blaming Vivian for his own failures. Andrew replied, “My failures are mine. They don't give anybody permission to lock another person in a room.” Sophie did not testify in open court. The court arranged for her earlier account to be handled according to safeguards designed to protect children.

When the jury returned, it convicted Vivian of unlawful confinement and associated offenses supported by the evidence. Other disputes, including the full history of communications, continued in separate proceedings. Andrew felt neither triumph nor relief strong enough to erase what had happened. Laura squeezed Nina's hand, walked past the reporters, and went home to a daughter who wanted to show her a science project.
