The wedding guests left in a bewildered procession past untouched flowers and a cake decorated with the initials A and V. A few had witnessed Sophie fall on the corridor carpet; others knew only that police vehicles had arrived. Andrew did not attempt to manage the gossip. He stood outside the emergency department with Laura's yellow scarf folded in his hands while Nina Patel arrived carrying a battered leather briefcase. She introduced herself and asked to see Laura. Andrew wanted explanations immediately, but Nina insisted that medical care and a formal statement came first. “There are things you deserve to know,” she said, “and things that need independent verification.”

Police interviewed Teresa, the catering worker who had seen Vivian escort Laura toward the service area. They collected hallway footage and the hotel's key-card access history. Vivian's lawyer argued that she had reacted poorly to an emotionally volatile visitor but denied ordering any confinement. Investigators treated that denial as an account to test, not a reason to ignore the scene. Footage showed Laura entering voluntarily, later attempting to leave, and being redirected by Vivian and a contracted event worker. The storeroom door required a staff key to open from the corridor. Its interior release had been obstructed by a rolling shelf. Laura's account of banging against the panel was consistent with marks on the metal.

When Sophie woke, she asked whether her mother would disappear again. Andrew promised that she would not be kept from Laura without a proper explanation. Then he stopped. He had made confident promises before, often about matters he had not fully understood. He corrected himself. “Your mother is at the hospital, and we're working with people who can help her. I'll tell you what I know, and I won't make things up when I don't.” Sophie studied his face. “Did she leave because of me?” “No,” he said immediately. “Never because of you.”

That evening Nina showed Andrew copies of the letters Laura had written, carefully dated and organized in a folder. Some described new recipes, the neighbor's puppy, or a particularly beautiful sunrise on the drive to work. Others apologized for missed visits without blaming Sophie. One said, I keep a place for you in my life every single day. Andrew read until the words blurred. He had received instead a series of anonymous messages implying Laura regretted motherhood. He showed Nina the messages saved on his phone. She compared their dates to the account logs.

At midnight, Andrew noticed a detail that made his stomach turn. The supposedly anonymous message describing Laura's departure had arrived three minutes after his office administrator reset the family's communication password. The reset request bore Vivian's employee identification number.
