Fourteen months earlier, Laura had been living in a furnished apartment forty miles from the house where she once tucked Sophie into bed. She worked as a respiratory therapist and picked up extra shifts whenever she could. Her marriage to Andrew was already strained after two years of long hours, arguments about childcare, and her mother's prolonged illness. There was no simple villain in their separation. They had both said cruel things. They had both withdrawn when conversation became difficult. They had agreed to spend time apart, not to erase each other from Sophie's life.

Their original parenting agreement provided regular visits and daily calls. Then communication began collapsing. Andrew said Laura missed appointments and ignored messages. Laura said Andrew canceled visits at the last moment and stopped answering her calls. Neither realized that the scheduling platform they had started using was administered by Vivian's consulting office. Vivian was then a family acquaintance helping Andrew coordinate work, childcare, and the proposed sale of his struggling architecture firm. She appeared calm, practical, and generous with her time.

Soon Laura received hostile notes that appeared to come from Andrew. Andrew received bitter responses apparently written by Laura. The messages became evidence in a contested custody proceeding. After Laura failed to attend a hearing she claimed she was never notified about, the court entered temporary orders limiting her contact. Andrew believed she had chosen not to fight. Laura believed Andrew was punishing her for leaving. By the time Laura understood how many notices were missing, she had lost stable housing and much of the money she had saved for representation.

Vivian entered Andrew's life more fully during those months. She made Sophie's lunches, remembered medication schedules, and arranged elaborate birthday parties. Sophie liked parts of their life together but never stopped asking about Laura. Vivian explained the questions as evidence that the child needed closure. She gently encouraged Andrew to dispose of Laura's belongings, then more insistently suggested that the wedding would mark a fresh start. He allowed her to organize almost every detail because he was tired of conflict and wanted to believe happiness could be planned.

Laura never stopped writing letters. She addressed them to Sophie at Andrew's house, including drawings, pressed flowers, and stories about ordinary days. None was returned. None was acknowledged. Laura initially wondered whether Andrew was destroying them. Then a postal clerk showed her that several envelopes had been redirected before reaching the house. The forwarding request contained a signature that looked like hers, but she had never signed it. Laura took a photograph of the form. On the bottom, in a space for the authorized agent, she saw a company name she recognized: Cross Family Services.
