By early autumn, the case against Vanessa had become more complicated than James expected. Investigators were reviewing suspected financial fraud, disputed electronic authorizations, and evidence of coordinated activity involving Havenbrook Holdings. At the same time, James's attorneys were working to protect Carter Construction from financial arrangements he claimed he'd never knowingly approved.

The business survived, but the experience changed how James managed it.

He introduced additional safeguards requiring independent review of major transfers. Senior employees received clearer procedures for approving unusual transactions, and no single person could authorize significant changes without appropriate oversight.

James knew these improvements wouldn't erase his mistakes.

But he hoped they would prevent others from being exposed to similar risks.

One afternoon, Martin invited him to tour the company's newest construction project. Workers were finishing a community center designed to provide affordable after-school programs for local children.

James walked through the unfinished hallways, listening to the sound of hammers and power tools.

His father had taught him the business on sites like this.

Claire had helped him grow it.

Now Lily was beginning to understand why protecting the company mattered.

"This place is going to be beautiful," Martin said.

James smiled.

"I think so."

As they reached the main entrance, Martin hesitated.

"There's something I haven't told you."

James turned.

"What?"

"Vanessa came here several times when you were away."

James felt his chest tighten.

"When?"

"Over the last six months."

"What was she doing?"

"Meeting with Victor Hale."

Martin explained that Vanessa claimed Victor was helping prepare investment proposals. Because James had previously introduced him as a family financial adviser, employees assumed the meetings were authorized.

"Did they access company records?"

"We're determining that."

James sighed.

He was tired of discovering new layers of deception.

Then Martin handed him a photograph from an employee security report.

It showed Vanessa and Victor leaving the building together.

The image itself wasn't surprising.

But the third person beside them was.

James recognized the man immediately.

His name was Peter Langford.

Peter had worked for Carter Construction for twelve years before resigning unexpectedly shortly after Vanessa entered James's life.

He'd been the company's senior accountant and one of James's most trusted employees.

"Why was Peter here?" James asked.

Martin shook his head.

"I don't know."

James studied the photograph.

Peter was carrying a black briefcase identical to one reported missing after his resignation.

The briefcase had contained old company financial records.

James immediately contacted Rebecca.

She listened carefully.

Then she asked a question that made him pause.

"James, why did Peter resign?"

He thought back.

"Vanessa told me she'd discovered irregularities in his work."

Rebecca sighed.

"Did you independently verify that?"

James closed his eyes.

"No."

For the first time, he wondered whether Vanessa had been controlling not only his personal life but also the people he trusted inside the company.
