James slowly turned toward Marcus. The young technician looked uncomfortable, as though he regretted being responsible for turning a wedding into a public confrontation. Vanessa immediately demanded that security remove him, claiming he'd illegally recorded a private conversation. James ignored her. Every instinct told him to take Lily home, but he needed to understand why the woman he'd trusted was so terrified of another recording.

"What happened during the honeymoon?" James asked.

Marcus glanced toward his phone.

"I think you should hear the complete conversation with your attorney present. There are references to documents and travel arrangements that need to be checked."

Vanessa stepped forward. "This is outrageous. He's blackmailing me!"

James studied her face. Only minutes earlier, she'd been smiling at him with apparent affection. Now her expression contained something he had never seen before: calculation stripped of warmth.

His sister Rebecca moved toward the altar. A family attorney for nearly twenty years, she had questioned several documents Vanessa encouraged James to sign before the wedding. James dismissed those concerns at the time, insisting his sister was simply protective.

"James," Rebecca said quietly, "don't sign anything else."

He looked at her.

"What do you know?"

Rebecca hesitated. "I know Vanessa repeatedly tried to gain authority over company accounts. I also know you stopped consulting me after she said I was interfering with your relationship."

Vanessa laughed sharply.

"Of course Rebecca would say that. She's never accepted me."

Rebecca remained calm.

"This isn't about whether I like you. It's about documents you've asked my brother to execute without independent advice."

James suddenly remembered the thick folder Vanessa handed him two nights earlier. She described it as paperwork needed to finalize their new joint financial arrangements. He had signed several pages while Lily watched television nearby.

"Those documents," he whispered. "What were they?"

Vanessa avoided his eyes.

"Routine marital planning."

Rebecca shook her head.

"Then you won't object to an independent review."

James removed his wedding ring from the small velvet box and placed it on the altar. The gesture felt strangely final, even though the ceremony had never been completed.

"The wedding is over."

Guests began whispering. Vanessa's mother rose from her chair, visibly furious, while several of James's business associates looked away.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You think you can humiliate me and walk away?"

James held Lily's hand.

"I haven't humiliated you. You did this yourself."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"You have no idea what you've already given me."

James felt a chill.

Rebecca heard the words too.

"What exactly has he given you, Vanessa?"

The bride smiled.

"Ask him about the documents he signed Thursday night."
