Peter Langford had moved to a quiet suburb outside Pittsburgh, where he worked for a small accounting firm. When Rebecca contacted him, he initially refused to speak. He explained that leaving Carter Construction had been humiliating and that he wanted nothing more to do with the people responsible.

Rebecca told him about the disputed financial records and Vanessa's suspected connection to Havenbrook.

Peter became silent.

Then he agreed to meet.

James arrived at Rebecca's office the following afternoon, carrying a folder of documents relating to Peter's resignation. He had reviewed those records several times and felt increasingly uncomfortable about the circumstances.

Peter entered looking nervous.

He was fifty-three, with graying hair and thick glasses. James remembered him as a patient man who brought homemade cookies to company meetings and rarely raised his voice.

"Peter," James said.

Peter nodded without smiling.

"Mr. Carter."

"You can still call me James."

Peter sat down.

Rebecca began by explaining that the conversation was voluntary and that Peter could have his own attorney present. He confirmed that he'd already consulted one.

Then she asked why he left the company.

Peter removed several documents from his briefcase.

"Vanessa accused me of falsifying expense reports."

James frowned.

"I remember."

"What she didn't tell you was that I discovered suspicious transfers involving Havenbrook Holdings."

James felt his stomach tighten.

Peter explained that Vanessa had repeatedly requested financial information under the pretext of helping James plan their marriage. When Peter refused to release certain records without direct authorization, she accused him of undermining her relationship with James.

"I tried contacting you," Peter said.

James looked down.

"She told me you were harassing her."

Peter nodded sadly.

"Then she convinced you to put me on administrative leave."

James remembered signing the suspension notice.

He had believed he was protecting the business from an employee acting improperly.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Peter continued.

Shortly before leaving, he'd noticed unusual login activity on several financial systems. He preserved copies of records because he feared someone might later accuse him of authorizing the transactions.

"Did you report it?" Rebecca asked.

"I tried. But nobody believed me."

James felt ashamed.

Peter opened another folder.

Inside were dated reports showing requests for account access, changes to vendor information, and unusual payment instructions. Several entries referenced Victor Hale.

Rebecca examined them carefully.

"These may be important."

Peter looked toward James.

"I didn't come here to get my old job back."

James nodded.

"I understand."

"I came because I spent twelve years helping build that company. I couldn't stand watching someone destroy it."

James extended his hand.

Peter hesitated, then accepted it.

For the first time in months, James felt something stronger than regret.

He felt grateful that someone he'd failed had still chosen to help him.
