"I just mean about what happened." "What happened is I found out you're a liar in front of your mother. I think I'm caught up." "Vanessa."
"Don't call me tonight." She opened the front door. A gust of cold air entered the warm room, moving the ribbons tied to the balloon strings. Vanessa paused on the threshold and looked back at Claire.
"I am sorry," she said. "Not for being caught. For knowing enough that I should have walked away months ago."
Claire said nothing. Vanessa left. The door closed behind her. The house became quieter but not calmer.
Ethan stood in the same place, staring at the door. Claire saw the look and hated that she could still interpret his expressions. Part of him wanted to follow Vanessa, not necessarily because he loved her but because the loss of control terrified him. For months he had been conductor of two separate worlds. Now both had rejected his authority at once.
"Go pack," Claire said. He looked at her. "Are you really not going to let me explain more?" "What is left?"
"A lot." "Then write it down." "Claire, please." "I cannot hear another sentence from you tonight that begins with my name and ends with a request for something."
He flinched.
Claire hated that seeing him hurt still hurt her. That was another betrayal, one committed by her own nervous system. Love did not disappear when evidence arrived. It remained in the body like a habit after the mind had lost permission to trust it.
Ethan turned toward the stairs. He had taken three steps when Margaret spoke. "Ethan." He stopped.
She stood beside Claire, her eyes red. "Take your wedding ring off before you go upstairs." The room went still. Ethan looked at his mother. "Mom."
"I don't want to see it on your hand while you're explaining why none of this means what it means." "That's between me and Claire." Margaret nodded. "Then ask Claire."
Everyone looked at her.
Claire stared at Ethan's left hand. The gold band caught the chandelier light. She thought of the day she placed it there, her own fingers trembling while he smiled at her in front of everyone they loved.
"Leave it on," she said. Ethan looked surprised. "I want you to feel it while you pack." He went upstairs without answering.
The moment he disappeared, Claire's knees weakened. Margaret caught her elbow and guided her toward a chair. Claire sat because resisting suddenly seemed impossible.
Mason crouched beside her. "Do you want me to go up there?" "No." "I can make sure he leaves."
"No." "Claire."
