Everyone stopped speaking.

Brooke covered her mouth. "Oh my God. Claire, I'm so sorry."

Claire stared at the wreckage. Ethan looked down at his own name disappearing into broken frosting. No one missed the symbolism. No one was cruel enough to mention it.

The silence that followed was the first honest silence of the night. There was nothing left to argue over in that moment, no sentence large enough to restore what the room had looked like before the light came on. The ruined cake on the floor ended the shouting more effectively than any demand for calm could have done.

Claire rose from the chair. "Leave it," she said when Brooke bent down with napkins. "I can clean it." "Not tonight."

Brooke straightened slowly. Claire looked at Ethan. "Go."

He seemed about to speak, then thought better of it. He picked up his duffel bag and walked to the front door. Thomas followed him without a word. Margaret hugged Claire tightly before leaving, and Natalie did the same, whispering that she would call in the morning but would not come over unless Claire wanted her to.

Within ten minutes, the house that had been prepared for a celebration was almost empty.

Mason stayed until Claire promised twice that Brooke would remain overnight. He kissed his sister's forehead, looked toward the ruined cake, and left after making Claire swear she would call if Ethan returned. Brooke locked the door behind him.

Then there were only two women standing in the bright living room among balloons, gifts, dirty glasses, and a cake on the floor. Brooke asked whether Claire wanted the decorations taken down. "No," Claire said. "Are you sure?"

"If you take them down, it'll look like tonight didn't happen." Brooke nodded. Claire walked to the wall and touched one gold letter of the birthday banner. The paper shifted lightly beneath her fingertip.

"I planned every detail," she said. "I called his mother three times about the food. I drove across town for that cake. I lied to him about where I was going because I wanted him to feel loved."

Brooke stood beside her. "You did love him. That's not something to be ashamed of."

Claire looked at her. "I still do. That's the humiliating part."

"No." "It feels like it." Brooke shook her head. "His betrayal doesn't get to rewrite your love into stupidity."

Claire looked away before she cried again.

They did not clean the cake until after midnight. Claire finally asked Brooke to help because the frosting had begun to harden against the floor. They knelt beside each other with paper towels and warm water while balloons floated above them like forgotten witnesses. Claire found the wedding photograph sticky with caramel, wiped the glass clean, and carried it upstairs without deciding whether she wanted to keep it.
