Claire could hear her own heartbeat.

She should have spoken then. She would later think about that moment countless times, about how easily she could have stepped forward and said his name before his hand ever touched the switch. But shock did not make her decisive. It made her still. Some part of her wanted more information. Another part wanted to preserve the final second of ignorance before the world rearranged itself.

Ethan reached toward the wall. The light switch clicked. Warm golden light flooded the living room, striking balloons, polished wood, silver serving dishes, the white frosting of the cake, and six faces fixed in various stages of celebration that had died before it began. From the open entryway the entire tableau was visible at once: Ethan and Vanessa beside each other at the threshold, Claire standing near the long dining table, and Margaret, Thomas, Natalie, Mason, and Brooke surrounding her in the decorated room. For the smallest fraction of a second, muscle memory took over.

"Surprise! Happy birthday!" the family shouted.

The words came out unevenly. Brooke's voice was bright at the beginning and vanished by the end. Thomas barely finished the second word. Natalie made a sound that was half cheer and half gasp.

Ethan froze with his hand still on the switch. Vanessa stood beside him in a red dress with her coat folded over one arm, one shoulder nearly touching his. Her confident smile remained on her face for perhaps one second too long, not because she did not understand what she was seeing but because her expression had not yet caught up to it.

Ethan's eyes moved across the room. His father. His mother. His sister. Mason. Brooke.

Then Claire. "Oh my God," he whispered.

Claire had imagined his birthday reaction all week. Surprise. Laughter. Maybe embarrassment. She had pictured him crossing the room to hug her. She had even considered whether he would tear up when he saw the watch.

Instead he looked terrified.

Claire looked at Vanessa. Her eyes moved from the platinum-blonde hair to the red dress, from the dress to the coat over her arm, then finally to the position of Vanessa's body beside her husband. Close enough to be intimate. Comfortable enough to be practiced.

"...Who is that?" Claire asked. No one answered. Ethan lowered his hand from the switch.

Vanessa looked at him. "Ethan?" Claire's stomach dropped at the familiarity in the way she said his name. "Who is that?" Claire asked again, louder.

"Claire, just give me a second." "A second for what?"

Vanessa shifted her weight and pulled her coat closer against her body. Her confidence had disappeared. "I think I should go."

Claire's eyes snapped toward her. Her voice changed. The shock was still there, but something colder had arrived beside it.

"No. You can stay and explain why you walked into my house with my husband." Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it. Ethan took one step forward. "Listen, this is not what it looks like."

Claire actually laughed. It was not a humorous sound. It came from somewhere beneath anger, from the absurdity of hearing the most familiar lie in the English language spoken inside a room decorated with photographs of the marriage it was meant to deny. "Then tell me what I'm looking at."
