"Do you want me."

Simone stopped under a streetlamp. The light made her long natural curls into a darker gold. Almond eyes wet. "Yes. Not as a prize I get for surviving counseling. As the man I married and failed and still wake up reaching for."

Aaron looked at her for a long time. A car passed. Somewhere a basketball hit a driveway in a lonely rhythm.

"I am not ready to move back into our room," he said. "I am ready to stop treating every kindness from you as a counterfeit. That is as far as I can go tonight."

Simone exhaled as if she had been holding the street. "I'll take as far."

Spring unspooled. Lily turned eight in April with a party in the backyard and too much cake. Aaron ran the grill. Simone managed the guest list and the goodie bags. Aaron's sister came again and this time hugged Simone, briefly, at the sink, a truce made of shared love for the child rather than resolution between adults. Dr. Okonkwo began asking them to practice smaller truths at home: name one fear before bed; name one gratitude; do not use Lily as a messenger.

In May, Brookhaven Elementary held Field Day. Aaron took a half day from work and stood on the grass in his jeans and a polo watching Lily run relay races with her two puffs bouncing and her sneakers blinking. Simone stood a few yards away in a sundress, camel cardigan abandoned to the season's heat. When Lily fell and scraped her knee, both parents moved. Aaron reached her first. He cleaned the scrape with a wipe from Simone's purse. Simone held the purple water bottle. Lily, tear-streaked and brave, looked at both of them and said, "You're both here," as if presence itself were the medal.

Aaron met Simone's eyes over their daughter's head. Something in his face loosened — not forgiveness entire, but the beginning of a door that had been locked from the inside.
