He did not sleep immediately. He thought of the clipboard. He thought of Isaiah Grant's name erased from a list and not erased from a marriage's history. He thought of hard choices still ahead — anniversaries that would hurt, a child who would ask again someday with older words, a trust that would have to be rebuilt in units smaller than declarations. He thought of Charlotte, of Brookhaven, of yellow buses, of a purple backpack, of a teacher asking a question that had been fair and catastrophic at once.

Beside him Simone whispered, "Aaron."

"I'm here."

"I know."

Summer deepened. They took Lily to the mountains for a long weekend and stayed in a cabin where the Wi-Fi failed and forced them into board games and creek walks and the untheatrical intimacy of shared insect repellent. Aaron watched Simone help Lily skip stones and felt, without deciding to feel it, the old love stir under the scar tissue. He did not announce the stirring. He let it exist. Simone caught him watching once and did not perform for the gaze; she only nodded, as if acknowledging a weather change.

In August they returned to counseling with a question Dr. Okonkwo had been circling for months: What does repair look like when it is not a return to the prior innocence.

Aaron answered first. "It looks like never again having a pickup list I haven't seen. It looks like phones unlocked without drama. It looks like me admitting I abandoned her emotionally long before she abandoned our vows, without letting that admission become her alibi. It looks like choosing, every week, not every minute — I can't do every minute — to stay."

Simone answered. "It looks like me living without secret rooms. It looks like accepting that Aaron may never trust me the way he did at the botanical garden, and loving him anyway without demanding a certificate of full restoration. It looks like being a mother who does not make her daughter carry adult weather."
