Dr. Okonkwo wrote something down. "Then that is the work. Not the fantasy of the clean slate. The practice of the stained one you refuse to throw away."

September returned Brookhaven Elementary to its rhythms. New teacher. Same buses. Lily's backpack was blue now, a graduation from purple she had announced with ceremony. Aaron and Simone alternated pickups with a shared calendar that both of them checked like people who had learned that logistics could be a love language or a landmine depending on honesty.

On a Thursday in late September — a Thursday Aaron felt in his body before he named it — he arrived at pickup and found Simone already there, camel cardigan in the early autumn cool, long natural curls loose. Lily ran to both of them. No teacher approached with a clipboard question. No other adult's name hung in the air.

In the car Lily said, "Remember when that other man got me once."

Aaron's hands tightened on the wheel. Simone went still.

Aaron said, carefully, "I remember."

"Is he mad we don't see him."

Simone turned in her seat. "Baby, that was a grown-up mistake. He isn't part of our pickup life. You didn't do anything wrong. Adults made choices that weren't fair to you or to Daddy."
