The bag.

Not the clear hospital belongings bag.

His leather messenger bag.

He looked toward the chair.

It sat there.

Zippered.

For one second, Mark stopped breathing.

He knew.

Not with certainty yet.

With the sudden horrible feeling of a memory reconnecting.

He had put it inside.

He saw the moment now.

Dad complaining.

Laura laughing.

Phone ringing.

He had placed the watch somewhere in the messenger bag.

Not the main compartment.

Something smaller.

A side zipper?

Inner pocket?

He looked at the bag.

Laura noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

She frowned.

“You look strange.”

“I’m trying to remember.”

Howard said from the bed:

“Then remember faster.”

Mark picked up the bag.

Opened the main compartment again.

Nothing.

Front.

Nothing.

Then his fingers touched the narrow zipper inside.

He froze.

He knew what was behind it.

The watch.

He could feel the shape through the lining.

His stomach dropped.

All Mark had to do was open the zipper.

One motion.

Five seconds.

Pull out the watch.

Call Evelyn back.

End it.

Instead, shame arrived before courage.

Everyone had heard him accuse her.

He had said theft.

He had demanded her badge.

He had watched security being mentioned.

If he opened the pocket now, everyone would know.

His sister.

His father.

The nurses.

They would know he had caused it.

Worse.

Howard would know.

Mark had spent his entire adult life believing he was the unreliable child in his father’s eyes.

Laura was organized.

Laura remembered birthdays.

Laura handled medical forms.

Laura arrived early.

Mark lost keys.

Forgot appointments.

Changed jobs twice in five years.

His father loved him.

But the old jokes accumulated.

You lose everything.

Don't give Mark the important folder.

Ask your sister to remember.

Most were harmless.

Some hurt.

The watch had become a test.

Don't lose it.

And Mark had thought he had.

He had panicked.

Accused.

Now the solution was inches from his hand.

Opening that zipper meant admitting his father had been right about him.

So Mark did something he would regret longer than misplacing any object.

He let go of the bag.

Laura stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“You were checking something.”

“I said nothing.”

Howard looked between them.

“Where is Evelyn?”

Laura’s expression hardened.

“Supervisor pulled her.”

“Why?”

“Because Mark accused her.”

“I said the watch disappeared under hospital care.”

“You said she stole it.”

“I said somebody took it.”

Howard closed his eyes.

“She took care of me all day.”

“Dad.”

“I'm not saying she did or didn't.”

“I’m saying I don't want people accused because we're upset.”

Mark felt sick.

He looked at the bag again.

One sentence.

That was all it would take.

I found it.

I put it here.
