Ruiz rewound.

They enlarged the image.

Howard removed something from his left wrist.

Handed it toward Mark.

Metal reflected light.

Watch.

Mark held it.

Then looked toward his bag.

Denise’s face changed.

“Pause.”

They froze the frame.

Evelyn was nowhere near Mark.

She stood beside the transport stretcher several feet away, checking paperwork.

Mark unzipped his leather bag.

Placed the watch inside.

Zipped it.

Then the phone reached his ear.

Thomas said nothing.

Nobody needed him to.

Monica whispered:

“Oh no.”

Ruiz continued.

Howard was transported.

Evelyn walked beside him.

Mark picked up the same leather bag and carried it to the room chair.

The watch never entered Evelyn’s hands.

Denise sat back.

Her face lost color.

“She was telling the truth.”

Thomas looked at her.

“That was always possible.”

Denise closed her eyes.

“I took her badge.”

“Yes.”

“I did it in front of everybody.”

“Yes.”

Thomas did not soften it.

Denise opened her eyes.

“Where is the watch now?”

Ruiz said:

“If the bag is still in the room…”

Thomas stood.

“Then we ask Mark.”

They returned to Howard’s room.

Mark saw them coming.

And knew.

Before anyone spoke, he put his hand on the leather bag.

Laura noticed.

“Mark?”

Thomas introduced himself.

“Mr. Halstead, I’m Thomas Jenkins with Patient Safety.”

“Security reviewed hallway footage from before your father’s procedure.”

Mark’s face went white.

Howard pushed himself slightly upright.

“You found something?”

Thomas looked at Mark.

“The footage shows your father handing his watch to Mark.”

“It also shows Mark putting it inside his leather messenger bag.”

Laura turned toward her brother.

“What?”

Howard stared.

Mark looked down.

“I can explain.”

Thomas’s voice remained level.

“Please open the bag.”

Mark did not move.

Laura’s anger rose instantly.

“Open it.”

He unzipped the main compartment.

Then the inner pocket.

His hand disappeared inside.

When it came out, the gold watch rested in his palm.

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Howard looked at the watch.

Then at Mark.

Then toward the hallway where Evelyn had been led away.

“You had it.”

Mark’s eyes filled.

“I forgot.”

Laura stared.

“You forgot?”

“I put it in there when the phone rang.”

“I didn't remember.”

Thomas asked:

“When did you remember?”

That question changed everything.

Mark looked at him.

“What?”

“When did you remember that it might be in that pocket?”

Mark said nothing.

Laura understood before Howard did.

“Mark.”

“When?”

His shoulders dropped.

“After they took her away.”

Laura took one step back.

“You knew?”

“I wasn't sure.”

“You opened the bag.”

“I didn't open that pocket.”

“But you remembered.”

Mark looked toward his father.

“I was ashamed.”

Howard’s face hardened.

Mark continued.

“Everyone was already looking at her.”

“I thought…”
