One Thursday she came home early from a walk and heard laughter from the kitchen: Daniel's low chuckle, Rachel's brighter answering sound, Oliver's gurgle. She stood in the foyer with her keys and listened to a domestic music that did not include her, and the old clickbait fear rose again—She stays here now—until she forced herself into the doorway and saw them: Daniel holding Oliver while Rachel wiped pureed carrot from the high chair tray, both of them looking up with the startled guilt of people caught being happy.

"Join us," Daniel said quickly. "Carrots are losing."

Laura took the sponge from Rachel. Their fingers touched. Rachel stepped back as if burned, then deliberately stepped forward again and stayed. "I'll get more wipes," she said, and left them alone with the orange battlefield.

Daniel met Laura's eyes. "That wasn't—"

"I know what it wasn't," Laura said. "I'm still allowed to hate how easily it looked like something."

"You're allowed," he said. "Hate it. Tell me. Just don't invent a crime we didn't commit."

She washed the tray with more force than hygiene required. "I keep waiting for the twist where it becomes simple. Where you're lying. Where she's lying. Where I can be righteous instead of confused."

"There isn't one," Daniel said. "There's only this mess Chris left us, and the mess I made by hiding it, and the fact that I still love you so much it makes the mess worse."
