"Rachel moves toward independent housing by spring unless we jointly request otherwise. Daniel and I attend counseling. Oliver's guardianship remains Daniel's legally, but major decisions—school someday, medical, relocation—come through both of us as a household. And no more secrets. If the court needs an affidavit from me, I'll sign one that says I understand the history and I choose to proceed."

Daniel's eyes shone. Rachel, perched on the armchair, nodded once, sharp and grateful.

Ms. Okonkwo smiled the careful smile of someone who had seen worse kitchens and worse motives. "That sounds like a family making a plan. I'll note it."

Counseling was a low building near Bethesda with ferns in the waiting room and a therapist named Dr. Patel who refused to let anyone narrate without interruption. She made Daniel repeat the sentence, "I decided for you," until he could say it without justifying it. She made Laura admit that part of her rage was not about Rachel at all but about missing her mother's last months' periphery—the world that had kept turning, cruelly, without Laura's supervision.

"You thought if you suffered enough in one place," Dr. Patel said, "the rest of your life would freeze politely and wait."

Laura stared at the ferns through the doorway. "Yes."

"It didn't."

"No."
