Rachel's eyes flicked to Daniel, then to Laura. There was apology in them, and something else—fatigue, wariness, a woman measuring whether she was about to be thrown out into the night with an infant in her arms. "I can take him upstairs," she said quietly. "If that helps."

"Don't," Laura said, not looking away from her husband. "Don't disappear with him. Not until someone tells me the truth."

Ethan tugged her sleeve. "Mom, it's okay. He's Oliver. He's little. I help with the bottles sometimes."

Oliver. A name already living in her son's mouth.

Laura felt the floor tilt under the bright family room, under the portraits of their wedding and Ethan's kindergarten graduation and the three of them at Ocean City two summers ago. She had been gone eight months. People remade whole lives in less.

Daniel scrubbed a hand over his face. "Ethan, buddy. Go put your mom's bag by the stairs. Then upstairs to your room for a bit, okay? Grown-up talk."

Ethan hesitated, loyal to the drama, then obeyed with the reluctant dignity of a ten-year-old who knew when he was being dismissed. The suitcase wheels whispered across hardwood. His bedroom door clicked.

Rachel remained standing, the baby settling against her with small wet breaths. Laura noticed details she did not want: the way Rachel knew which step creaked, the folded receiving blanket on the arm of the couch, the second sippy cup of water on the side table that was not Ethan's. This was not a visit. This was habitation.

"Start," Laura said.
