She simply handed Eleanor a glass of water. The legal issue over the Gucci bag resolved faster than the family issue. The county attorney offered both women a diversionary arrangement after reviewing the video and witness statements. Eleanor would reimburse Sloan for the documented replacement value of the bag and the contents that could reasonably be verified.

Sloan would reimburse Eleanor for the cake. Both would agree to no further intentional property damage and no direct contact for sixty days except through counsel. If both complied, neither incident would be prosecuted. Rebecca advised Eleanor to accept.

Eleanor did. The final amount she paid Sloan was $2,940, including the handbag, wallet, cosmetics, and a damaged pair of sunglasses. Sloan paid $480 for the cake. When Eleanor wrote the check, she put “property restitution” in the memo line rather than anything clever.

Margaret looked disappointed. “I was hoping for ‘Oops.” “I am trying to remain out of court.” “That is less fun.”

“Most responsible things are.” Sloan, meanwhile, began telling a different version of the birthday story. On social media she never named Eleanor directly, but she posted about “older women who weaponize wealth,” “family systems built on control,” and “what happens when a matriarch cannot tolerate another woman having influence.” The posts did well.

Comments filled with strangers projecting their own mothers-in-law into the blanks. Sloan gained almost eight thousand followers in a week. Harrison said nothing publicly. Privately, he moved out of his townhouse and into Sloan’s apartment because he said Eleanor had “made it impossible” for him to keep paying everything while suspended.

This was not financially accurate. His salary continued during the review. But living with Sloan made him feel like he was choosing a side, and at that stage choosing a side felt easier than examining why sides existed. His daughter Lucy noticed immediately.

Claire, Harrison’s ex-wife, called Eleanor one evening after Lucy came home from a weekend with her father crying. “What happened at the apartment?” Eleanor asked. Claire sighed.
