“That’s allowed.” “I know.” He dried another plate. “Sloan was good with her sometimes.”

“I know.” That was another difficult truth. People who do harmful things are rarely harmful every minute. Sloan had bought Lucy thoughtful birthday gifts, helped her choose a Halloween costume, and once spent two hours braiding friendship bracelets with her during a rainy weekend.

Eleanor refused to revise those memories because the adult relationship ended badly. Maturity, she was learning, required accurate accounting of goodness too. The following March, Harrison attended his first board meeting since the disciplinary action—not as a director, but as a project presenter. He had led the turnaround of a stalled apartment renovation that was six weeks behind schedule when assigned to him.

He brought the project back within two weeks of target without increasing budget, largely by renegotiating subcontractor sequencing and catching a structural inspection issue before it created further delay. His presentation was concise. No grandstanding. When he finished, Daniel Price asked two technical questions and Sharon Kim complimented the recovery plan.

Eleanor said nothing beyond what she would have said to any project manager. Afterward, Harrison caught up to her in the hallway. “You could have said good job.” She looked at him.

“You want your mother or your chairwoman?” He considered that. “My mother.” Eleanor smiled.

“Good job.” He smiled back. Then she added, “Your contingency schedule on the electrical work was excellent.” “There she is.”

By summer, nearly a year after the ruined birthday cake, Mercer House had quietly disappeared from Sloan’s public branding. She pivoted to consulting for boutique hotels and wellness brands and appeared, from a distance, to be doing reasonably well. Harrison heard through mutual acquaintances that she had moved to Austin. He felt relief, some embarrassment, and a small honest sadness.
