A man called out, "Not your fault."

Ethan shook his head.

"I'm chairman of the company operating this flight."

That ended the argument.

"So it is my responsibility."

He explained the manifest issue.

Not every detail.

Enough.

"When passenger records are changed in a way we cannot verify, we do not simply close the door and hope everything else is correct."

Passengers listened.

"We will rebook every affected traveler."

"Meals, lounge access, hotels if necessary, and compensation will be provided."

A woman near the front raised her hand.

She had been in first class.

"I owe you an apology."

Ethan looked at her.

She swallowed.

"I laughed."

Emma watched.

The woman continued.

"When that woman said you looked like you belonged in economy."

Her face reddened.

"I laughed."

Ethan waited.

"I'm sorry."

Another passenger stepped forward.

The man who had recorded.

"So do I."

Ethan looked at him.

"I filmed instead of saying anything."

"You preserved evidence."

"That's not why I started."

The honesty mattered.

"I thought it was entertaining."

He looked embarrassed.

"Then it stopped being entertaining."

Ethan nodded.

The man said, "I should've spoken."

Ethan replied, "Next time, do."

No shaming.

No absolution.

Just responsibility.

A third passenger said quietly, "A lot of us knew it was wrong."

Ethan looked across the room.

"That's usually how these things work."

Emma looked up at him.

Ethan continued.

"Bad behavior doesn't always need a room full of supporters."

He glanced toward the passengers.

"Sometimes it only needs a room full of people deciding silence is easier."

Nobody argued.

An hour later, Ethan and Emma approached the replacement aircraft.

Marcus waited near the door.

"1A and 1B are confirmed."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"I've heard that before today."

Marcus winced.

"Too soon?"

"Probably."

They walked toward the jet bridge.

Then Ethan noticed a woman near the boarding area.

Thirty-something.

Exhausted.

Supporting a boy around twelve who wore a rigid brace around his left leg.

The boy leaned heavily on crutches.

A gate employee was explaining their seats were near the rear.

The mother looked overwhelmed.

Ethan stopped.

Emma followed his gaze.

The boy shifted painfully.

She whispered, "His leg hurts."

"Looks like it."

Emma looked at her father.

Then toward the boarding pass in his hand.

She understood before he spoke.

"Dad."

"What?"

"Give them ours."

Ethan smiled.

"You sure?"

Emma nodded.

"We don't need them."

The answer made his chest tighten.

They approached the mother.

After initial confusion and repeated refusal, she accepted.

Marcus tried to arrange another premium pair for Ethan and Emma.

Ethan declined.

"Put us together anywhere."

"You don't have to prove anything."

"I'm not."

He looked at Emma.

"We're comfortable."

They boarded.

Rows farther back.

Two ordinary economy seats together.

Emma took the window.

Ethan sat beside her.

Passengers recognized them.

Some smiled.

One man clapped once before realizing how awkward it was and stopping.

Ethan laughed.

Emma whispered, "That was weird."

"Very."

The aircraft pushed back.
