He turned slightly toward her.

"It's okay."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

Clare tried to lower her voice.

"Sir, perhaps if you could step into the aisle for a moment, we can resolve this without holding boarding."

Ethan looked at the aisle.

Then at Emma.

"No."

Clare blinked.

"No?"

"I won't leave my daughter sitting here alone while you resolve a seat that is already correctly assigned."

"It's only for a moment."

"Then resolve it here."

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

"This is absurd."

Ethan held out both boarding passes.

"Verify them in the central reservation system."

Clare's smile tightened.

"Sir, please don't make this more complicated than it needs to be."

Ethan stared at her.

"I'm asking you to check two seat numbers."

The cabin had become quieter.

Passengers boarding from behind slowed as they passed the confrontation.

Some looked away.

Others openly watched.

One man in seat 2C subtly lifted his phone.

Emma noticed him.

She noticed everybody.

That was the part Ethan hated most.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Clare.

The eyes.

Emma was ten years old.

Old enough to understand humiliation.

Young enough to think public humiliation might mean she had actually done something wrong.

She pulled her backpack closer.

Ethan rested one hand over hers.

"Keep breathing."

She nodded.

Clare took out her tablet.

Ethan watched her sign into the cabin management system.

The original seating chart appeared.

He could see enough of the screen from where he sat.

1A: WALKER/ETHAN.

1B: WALKER/EMMA.

3D: SINCLAIR/VANESSA.

Clare saw it too.

Her thumb paused.

There was still time.

Then Vanessa leaned toward her.

"You know Sinclair Global is reviewing airline partners this quarter."

Clare's eyes shifted.

Vanessa smiled.

"I'd hate to think customer service standards here aren't what we've been told."

The implication hung between them.

Not an explicit threat.

Something more useful.

Clare tapped the screen.

Ethan watched.

His name vanished from 1A.

A prompt appeared.

REASSIGN PASSENGER?

Clare selected yes.

Another menu.

VOLUNTARY RESEATING.

Her thumb hovered.

Then pressed.

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

"What did you just do?"

Clare turned the tablet away.

"We're making an operational adjustment."

"No."

"Sir—"

"You changed the seat record."

Clare's voice became firmer.

"I need you to cooperate."

"I did not agree to a change."

"We are permitted to reassign seats."

"For legitimate operational reasons."

"Exactly."

"What operational reason?"

Clare did not answer.

Instead she said, "We can offer you an economy seat near the rear."

Emma looked up quickly.

"What about me?"

Clare glanced at her.

"You can remain here."

Ethan stared.

Clare continued.

"Or, if you'd prefer to sit together, once boarding is complete we'll see what pair of seats may be available farther back."

Ethan's voice changed.

Still quiet.

But harder.

"You are proposing to separate a ten-year-old child from her only parent because another passenger wants our seat."

Clare looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa did not.

She gave a dismissive laugh.

"Surely she's old enough to sit for a few hours without holding your hand."

Emma lowered her head.

Ethan turned toward Vanessa.

For the first time, something cold entered his expression.

"Do not speak to my daughter."

Vanessa blinked.

The cabin went completely silent.

Ethan did not raise his voice.
