Five minutes later, the captain made an announcement.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we've been instructed to temporarily deplane while a ground-operational review is completed. Please take essential personal belongings with you and follow crew instructions back into the gate area."

The cabin erupted.

"What?"

"Are you serious?"

"We just boarded."

"I have a connection."

Vanessa remained seated.

Clare approached.

"Ms. Sinclair, we'll need everyone to deplane."

"I'm not moving."

"Unfortunately, it's mandatory."

"Get the terminal manager."

Clare looked toward the door.

"I don't think that will help."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Is this because of him?"

Clare stayed silent.

Vanessa slapped one palm against the armrest.

"This is ridiculous."

Her hand landed partly over Ethan's folded boarding pass.

The paper shifted.

For the first time she saw the printed name.

ETHAN WALKER.

She stared.

Something about it seemed familiar.

But not enough.

Passengers began filing forward.

Several looked toward seat 1A as they passed.

The man who had filmed the original confrontation gave Vanessa a cold look.

The woman in 2A shook her head.

Vanessa's assistant stood.

"Ms. Sinclair, perhaps we should—"

"Sit down."

"Everyone else is leaving."

"I said sit."

The assistant hesitated.

Then remained standing.

Eventually Clare returned.

"Ms. Sinclair, airport security will be asked to assist if necessary."

Vanessa looked at her.

"You would threaten me?"

Clare's expression had changed.

Fear now outweighed loyalty.

"No. I'm informing you."

Vanessa finally stood.

She left 1A.

Ethan's boarding pass remained on the armrest.

As she stepped into the jet bridge, she saw the group.

Marcus Bennett.

Two operations supervisors.

Rachel Monroe, Aurelia's director of legal affairs and compliance.

Three additional senior managers.

Robert Cain standing several feet away.

And Ethan.

Still wearing the same old coat.

Still holding Emma's hand.

But everyone around him was waiting for him to speak.

Vanessa slowed.

Clare emerged behind her.

Marcus turned toward Ethan.

"Chairman Walker, the passenger-data archive is locked."

The words moved through the deplaning crowd.

Chairman Walker.

Passengers stopped pretending not to listen.

Vanessa stared at Ethan.

Her face changed.

Not recognition first.

Disbelief.

Then calculation.

"Chairman of what?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Aurelia Atlantic Airlines."

The silence was immediate.

Vanessa's assistant closed her eyes.

Clare looked as if someone had removed the floor beneath her.

Robert stared downward.

Emma looked at Vanessa.

Ethan said nothing.

Vanessa's gaze moved over his worn coat.

Scuffed shoes.

Plain shirt.

Then back to Marcus.

"You're serious?"

Marcus did not answer.

He didn't need to.

Vanessa took one step toward Ethan.

"Mr. Walker, there has obviously been some kind of misunderstanding."

Ethan looked at her.

Her voice softened dramatically.

"I had no idea."

Emma's fingers tightened around Ethan's hand.

Ethan responded quietly.

"I know."

Vanessa almost smiled in relief.

Then he continued.

"That's what makes it useful."

Her smile vanished.

Passengers were moved into the gate lounge.

Operations staff secured the boarding area.

Rachel Monroe set up at a portable terminal near the podium.

She was fifty-two, precise, direct, and among the few people in Aurelia who had argued with Ethan in board meetings without hesitation.

He trusted her because she cared more about the integrity of the company than his comfort.

She looked at him.
