Madeline Ashford did not take the result well.

The next Tuesday, during break, Ethan overheard her hissing at her father near the back staircase. “I played better than he did,” she said. “Then your teacher should have chosen better,” Charles replied. Ethan kept walking.

He did not know whether to feel guilty or angry. Ms. Sterling, who apparently knew everything that happened in her building before it happened, called Madeline in after class that day and kept her for twenty minutes.

Madeline emerged red-eyed and silent. She never apologized to Ethan exactly. But the brittle hostility she had worn around him since spring cracked into something closer to bruised respect.

As September approached, Bellcroft moved into its full academic-year rhythm, and Ethan’s life became both richer and more complicated.

He was still a middle-school boy with science quizzes and a mother who insisted on chores. He also now had youth strings rehearsal, private lessons, and a gala preview feature to prepare. Some evenings he did homework at Bellcroft until Dana could collect him after cleaning. Other nights he practiced with a mute after nine because the downstairs neighbor had an infant.

His old apartment, once merely small, now seemed acoustically strategic. The laundry room remained useful. So did the hallway outside the storage lockers, where no one complained if he played scales softly while waiting for Dana’s carpool schedule to align.
