Ms. Sterling gestured toward the chairs against the wall. “You can watch today,” she said in a controlled voice that might have sounded compassionate if her face had not remained so guarded. “There’s no shame in waiting until you’re ready.” She did not mean to be malicious.

She meant to prevent what she assumed would be a public collapse. Her mistake was the ancient teacher’s mistake: believing appearances had offered enough evidence to predict capacity. Ethan heard the room deciding things around him and felt shame begin to close its fingers over his throat.

Then he remembered Arthur Levin saying, on one of the hardest days they ever had together, “People will try to rescue you from failing in ways that allow them to feel superior to the rescue. Do not accept that kind of mercy.”

So Ethan set the case on an empty chair, unlatched it, and opened it anyway.

Inside lay an older violin with a varnish worn pale where hands had known it for decades. It was not worthless. It was worse, socially, than worthless. It was unremarkable.

Not visibly prestigious, not new, not capable of announcing its own legitimacy from across a room. Ethan lifted it out carefully, then reached for his bow. He knew before he touched it that the leather wrapping had slipped a little more that week.

He knew the hair was uneven. He also knew it would probably hold through one piece if he kept his right hand steady. “I am ready,” he said.
