She also scheduled medical testing without being asked.

When she told him, Marcus stared at her for a long moment. He had avoided thinking about that dimension because betrayal was already taking up too much space. The realization that his physical health had been placed inside decisions he did not consent to triggered a different kind of anger. “Were you careful?” he asked.

Lauren looked ashamed. “Not every time.” Marcus stood and walked out of the room. He drove around for nearly an hour before returning.

The next day he made his own appointment.

That period became the lowest point of the separation, not because anything new happened between them, but because consequences kept arriving after the original discovery. Betrayal is rarely one event. It is a delayed delivery system. Every fact arrives carrying another question, every answer opens another room. Caleb noticed the adults were tired.

He began sleeping badly, asking for water twice after bedtime, then asking whether Marcus would still be there in the morning. Marcus answered yes every time. Lauren, when she came for dinner, gave the same assurance about the next afternoon. They tried to keep adult arguments out of Caleb’s hearing, but children hear atmosphere even when they miss words.

One night he asked Marcus, “Are you and Mom getting unmarried?” Marcus sat on the edge of his bed. “I don’t know yet.” Caleb’s face tightened. “If you do, where do I live?”

“With both of us,” Marcus said. “You will always have both of us.” “Same house?” Marcus swallowed. “Maybe not the same house.”

Caleb began crying. Marcus held him and resisted the urge to make promises he could not guarantee.

The next morning he texted Lauren: We need someone for Caleb. Not us. A child therapist. Lauren replied immediately: Yes. That became one of the first useful decisions they made together after the discovery.
