“The law is complicated. Consent should not be.” He drove home with the unsigned papers still in the briefcase. That evening, he told Lauren they existed.

Her face went white. She sat at the kitchen table with both palms flat on the wood while Marcus explained that he had almost signed but didn’t. He expected relief, maybe gratitude. Lauren surprised him by asking, “Do you want to?” “I don’t know.”

She nodded through tears. “Then I’m glad you have them.” Marcus frowned.

Lauren took a breath. “I don’t want you staying because leaving feels too complicated. If you stay, I need to know you could have gone.” The sentence echoed Dana so closely that Marcus almost laughed. Instead he said, “That is exactly what she told me.”

Lauren looked down. “Smart woman.”

That night they spoke more honestly than they had in months.

Marcus told Lauren he had begun to resent the word reconciliation because it sounded like two pieces naturally joining where they once fit. He did not think they fit the same way anymore. Lauren said she did not expect them to. They discussed whether a new marriage could be built inside the legal shell of the old one, and whether doing so was brave or merely stubborn. No conclusion arrived.

But they stopped pretending a conclusion had to arrive quickly. A few days later, Caleb’s soccer team played its first winter indoor match.

Marcus and Lauren sat on the same bleacher row with one seat between them. Caleb scored once, missed badly twice, and spent the last five minutes of the game more interested in adjusting his socks than following the ball. When the whistle ended, he ran toward them grinning, sweaty and triumphant. “Did you see my goal?” “Every second,” Marcus said.

Lauren nodded. “You were amazing.” Caleb looked at the empty seat between them. Then he squeezed himself into it.
