Marcus set the box down. “She wasn’t.”
“I know now.” Caleb leaned against the workbench. His features had changed with adolescence, but the hazel eyes were the same. “I also remember you telling me I didn’t have to fix it.” Marcus waited.
Caleb looked toward the open garage door. “That was probably the best thing you could’ve said.” Marcus felt a lump rise in his throat. “Why?”
“Because kids think everything is because of them.” Caleb shrugged. “When you and Mom were weird for months, I kept thinking maybe if I had never worn the jacket, nobody would have fought. But every time I thought that, I remembered you said the problem existed before I said anything.” Marcus stepped closer and put a hand on his son’s shoulder.
“That was true then,” he said. “Still true now.” Caleb nodded.
After a moment he asked, “Do you trust Mom?” Marcus smiled faintly. At seventeen, his son had earned more nuance than at six.
“Yes,” he said. “But not because what happened stopped mattering. I trust her because of what she did afterward for a long time.” Caleb considered that. “So trust can come back?”
“Sometimes.” “Always?” “No.” That answer seemed to satisfy him more than reassurance would have.
Lauren joined them a few minutes later carrying lemonade and complaining that they had been in the garage for two hours without throwing away anything useful. Caleb laughed, took a glass, and called her impossible. Marcus watched mother and son argue about a box of old soccer trophies and felt something he rarely allowed himself to name plainly. Gratitude.
Not gratitude for the betrayal. Never that. People sometimes misuse recovery by pretending pain becomes worthwhile because growth followed.
