As the state investigation widened, Simon Keene disappeared. His office receptionist claimed he had gone abroad on business, but records showed that his passport had been flagged after investigators found payment transfers through Crescent Holdings. A rented storage room held duplicate invoices, old surveillance equipment, and the remains of a shredded photograph. Investigators reconstructed enough of the picture to recognize Daniel entering a motel two years after his supposed death.

The motel had closed, leaving only a vacant lot and a few former employees to trace. One housekeeper, Elaine Porter, remembered a quiet guest who repaired the building's broken washing machine without accepting payment. He sometimes spoke with a woman who wore a hospital identification bracelet beneath her sleeve. Elaine recalled that the guest never used the front entrance when a dark sedan was parked nearby.

Brooks showed Elaine photographs of Daniel and three other men. She selected Daniel without hesitation but said that memories from years earlier could be imperfect. Brooks recorded her uncertainty as carefully as her recognition. Those distinctions mattered; the case had already suffered from too many officials pretending to know more than they did.

Back home, Mara struggled with a more ordinary question: what would happen if Daniel really returned? She had learned to fix leaking faucets, attend parent conferences alone, and explain Father's Day without making Caleb feel abandoned. A reunion would not erase the life they had built without him. She could be grateful he survived and furious that he stayed away.

Caleb sensed the conflict. He told Mara that he would be angry too, even if he wanted a hug first. They sat at the kitchen table knitting a new scarf from leftover wool. Caleb deliberately made the blue star crooked.

Elaine Porter remembered Daniel leaving extra cash beside the motel's malfunctioning heater after fixing it. She'd thought he was a lonely traveler who worried too much about locked doors. Brooks asked whether he ever received visitors. Elaine said a woman carrying a stack of accounting textbooks had come twice, always through the back staircase. She could not swear it was Claire. Brooks thanked her for refusing to claim certainty. Back at her office, the investigator placed the statement beside photographs and phone records, treating recollection as one piece of a larger picture rather than the final answer.

The details would matter later.

An investigator called shortly after midnight. Claire Benton had been located alive and safe, and she was ready to testify. But she would speak only after confirming that a certain police officer had not been compromised. The name she gave was Elias Ward. Then she asked Brooks to search an old case involving a dead driver named Frank Mercer.
