The official death certificate carried no medical examiner's signature. It cited an administrative declaration issued after the transport explosion. Naomi had challenged dubious records before, but she'd never seen a widow forced to mourn on evidence so thin. She asked an independent forensic records specialist to examine the paperwork while Brooks requested restricted agency correspondence.

Ward remained hospitalized. When Brooks visited him, he asked that Mara be present, then told them what had happened on the transport route. Daniel and Ward had discovered that a network of officers, contractors, and politicians was selling the identities of protected witnesses to criminals. Their original plan had been to take the information directly to federal investigators. But the operation was compromised, and the vehicle meant to carry an undercover witness exploded before reaching the highway.

Daniel was not inside. He had switched vehicles minutes earlier after discovering an unfamiliar tracker. The explosion killed a driver named Frank Mercer, whose identity was later buried beneath Daniel's false death announcement. Ward had helped Daniel escape because he believed someone in the department had ordered the attack. They separated to protect the evidence. Then Daniel vanished even from Ward.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Mara asked. Ward couldn't meet her eyes. He said the threats were real, that Caleb had been an infant, and that someone had warned him any contact would bring men to her door. Ward had lived with the damage of that decision for ten years.

Mara listened without offering absolution. Fear explained silence; it didn't make ten years of unanswered birthdays disappear. Caleb, who'd been waiting in the hallway with Ruth, entered when the nurse called for his mother. Ward apologized to him too. Caleb asked the simplest question anyone had asked that day: "Is my dad alive?"

Ward asked Mara to tell Frank Mercer's family what she had learned, even if it complicated the story people wanted to tell about Daniel. He said Frank had always kept peppermints in the glove compartment and called his daughter every night before bed. Details like that never appeared in the transport report. Mara wrote them down, refusing to allow the dead driver to become a nameless sacrifice in an investigation about her husband. Ward watched her do it and appeared relieved.

There was still more to understand about the hospital ward. The details would matter later.

Ward admitted he didn't know. But six months earlier a package had arrived containing a new red scarf, unfinished, with the same crooked blue star. Its mailing label had been destroyed. Ward had begun investigating again, and someone had followed him to the bus stop. Mara suddenly realized that the scarf Caleb wore was not the only one.
