The hearing took place in a courtroom far smaller than the television coverage suggested. Mara sat beside Teresa Mercer and Gloria Harris while attorneys argued over whether documents created during a secret operation should remain sealed. Vale's lawyer described disclosure as a threat to public safety. Naomi replied that secrecy could not be used indefinitely to protect officials accused of falsifying deaths and destroying evidence.

The judge ordered limited release to independent investigators, preserving legitimate witness identities while permitting review of the contested transport timeline. It wasn't the sweeping victory reporters announced outside. Most records remained restricted, and future litigation was certain. But the order established that Vale no longer controlled the only authorized version of events.

After the hearing, reporters clustered around Mara. She refused to speculate about Daniel's location. Instead she spoke about Frank Mercer, the driver whose actual death had been hidden, and about the people who had spent years seeking honest records. Teresa squeezed her hand without looking at the cameras.

Caleb watched the coverage at Ruth's house. He saw his mother standing straight before a bank of microphones, and for the first time he understood why she sometimes cried after everyone else was asleep. His teacher later told him that bravery wasn't the absence of fear. It was choosing a careful action despite fear. Caleb wrote the sentence in his journal, though he wasn't sure whether it applied to his father.

That evening Brooks called with the results of a fresh forensic analysis. The explosion scene had contained two sets of human remains, not one. A second victim had never been identified because samples had been mishandled. Investigators were now tracing the missing chain-of-custody forms and notifying families who could be affected.

Outside the courthouse, a reporter asked Caleb what it was like to be the child who helped expose a conspiracy. Mara stepped between them and said her son was not available for interviews. Caleb later told her he had almost answered because the reporter seemed friendly. She explained that friendliness did not make every question appropriate. They bought sandwiches and ate on a bench away from the cameras. He asked whether his father had ever eaten on that same street. Mara said almost certainly. It comforted him to imagine a small ordinary overlap between their separate lives.

He thought about that for a long time.

Nobody could promise an easy ending.

Mara's relief for Daniel mixed with dread for another household. The case grew wider each time someone opened an honest record. Then Brooks added that the original evidence custodian had recently died, leaving behind a notarized statement sealed in his attorney's office. It named the officer who ordered the evidence labels changed.
