Daniel Turner did not knock the next morning. Instead, Naomi received a message from federal agents confirming that he had entered protective custody and was providing sworn testimony. His identity had been verified through fingerprints and records established before the explosion. After ten years of rumor, there was finally an official document stating the truth: Daniel Turner was alive.

Mara showed Caleb the notice, careful to explain that a verified identity did not guarantee an immediate reunion. Daniel's testimony concerned people who still had allies outside custody. Agents wanted to complete emergency security arrangements before exposing the family. Mara insisted that she would not accept another indefinite silence disguised as protection.

Her insistence worked. A supervised video call was scheduled for the following evening. Caleb changed shirts three times, then decided to wear his yellow raincoat because Daniel might recognize it from a recent photograph. Mara told him he could ask anything and did not owe his father reassurance.

When Daniel appeared on the screen, his hair was gray at the temples and a narrow scar crossed his eyebrow. He looked older than the man in the photographs but sounded unmistakably the same as the voice on the phone. He began to speak and stopped when Caleb raised the red scarf toward the camera.

"You made this," Caleb said. Daniel nodded. Caleb asked why he'd missed his birthdays. Daniel said he'd believed distance kept them safe, but he understood now that safety had cost them something irreplaceable. He did not ask the boy to forgive him. He apologized for each year he had not been there.

Mara asked questions about the relocation decisions, the letters, and the people still at risk. Daniel answered what he could and admitted when he did not know. For the first time in ten years, uncertainty sounded like an honest limit rather than a wall built to keep her outside.

The call left Caleb with more feelings than he could name. He was thrilled to see his father's face, furious about the missed years, and embarrassed by how badly he wanted to tell his classmates. Mara suggested they write down what had been promised so nobody had to depend on memory alone. Daniel had promised another call when security permitted and a visit when authorities approved. Caleb wrote both in his journal.

She knew the next answer might hurt.

As the call ended, Caleb asked whether Daniel still knew how to knit. Daniel smiled through tears and said he did. "Then you can show me how to fix the star," Caleb replied. But before the screen went dark, Daniel warned Mara that the most damaging evidence against Vale had not yet been shown in court.
