Edward placed the resignation on the table as though it settled everything. Caroline examined the date, the witness line, and the notary seal. She did not declare the paper fraudulent. Instead, she asked when the original had been executed and why it had never been supplied to the independent trust protector. Edward offered a vague account of a private signing during Margaret's illness. Samuel showed a calendar entry placing Margaret in inpatient rehabilitation that same afternoon. Edward grew angry and called the calendar unreliable.

The argument threatened to consume the room until Hannah interrupted. "What happens to Lucy tonight?" Silence answered her. She repeated the question, this time looking at Daniel. Under the existing parenting schedule, Lucy was supposed to remain with him until Monday morning. Daniel said she should go home with Hannah. Celeste protested that such a change would make them look guilty. Daniel's expression hardened. "My daughter's not staying here to manage your reputation." It was the first time all day he had chosen her without calculating the social cost.

Priya documented the temporary agreement in writing. Neither parent would make an educational placement or travel decision without following the custody order and obtaining required consent. Daniel signed first. Hannah signed next. Lucy, sitting with a coloring book nearby, was not asked to perform gratitude. She simply breathed easier when Hannah said they were going home together.

Before leaving, Daniel removed his wedding ring. The ceremony had already occurred before the reception, and the legal status of the marriage could not be erased by one dramatic gesture. He understood that. He told Celeste he would seek legal advice about separation and any options available to him. She stared at the ring in his hand as if it were an insult greater than her daughter's fear. "You would throw away everything for one misunderstanding?" she asked. Daniel looked toward the hallway where Lucy waited. "That's the question I should have asked you."

She carried that knowledge with her into the uncertain days ahead.

Hannah drove home along roads still wet from morning irrigation. Lucy fell asleep before they reached the highway. At a stoplight, Hannah noticed the empty child seat reflected in her rearview mirror and remembered how close she had come to losing trust in her own instincts. The recording had brought the problem into the open, but the evidence remained incomplete. A contested signature, suspicious invoices, and a frightened child would still require careful investigation. When they arrived, a plain envelope sat outside Hannah's apartment door. Inside was a photocopy of the original school application, and on the guardian line, beneath the forged signature, someone had written in red ink: Ask Daniel about the first draft.
